Compound nouns: the last word rules
German builds new nouns by welding old ones together, with no space and no hyphen. Mittag plus Essen gives das Mittagessen. Two rules make these words readable rather than frightening. First, the LAST part carries the meaning and the gender: a Mittagessen is a kind of Essen, so it is das like Essen, not der like Mittag. Second, read a long compound from the back: Rückenschmerzen is Schmerzen (pains) of the Rücken (back). Once you read backwards, even a twenty-letter word decodes in a second. Persian does something similar with «کتابخانه», so the idea is not foreign, only the length is.
