Gender is memorised, not worked out — but there are hints
German gender is grammatical, not biological. Die Katze is feminine whether the animal is male or female, der Hund is masculine either way, and das Mädchen, a girl, is neuter because every word ending in -chen is neuter regardless of meaning. That last point is the useful one: endings are the best predictor you have. Words ending in -ung, -heit, -keit, -schaft and -e are usually feminine; words ending in -chen and -lein are always neuter; and days, months and seasons are all masculine. Learn the article with the word from the first day and you avoid a problem that otherwise follows you for years.
