Where English reaches for Greek and Latin, German assembles a word from parts it already owns. A rhinoceros is a Nashorn, a nose-horn. A hippo is a Nilpferd, a Nile-horse. A glove is a Handschuh, a hand-shoe. A hospital is a Krankenhaus, a sick-house. This is genuinely good news for a beginner: German vocabulary is more transparent than English, and a word you have never seen often decodes itself if you read it from the back, as you learned in lesson 26. The compound also takes the gender of its last part, so das Nashorn is neuter because das Horn is.
