What the four marks do, and why every noun is capital

اوملاوت تزئین نیست: مصوت و اغلب معنی را عوض می‌کند. Mutter یعنی مادر و Mütter یعنی مادرها؛ schon یعنی «از قبل» و schön یعنی «زیبا». اگر صفحه‌کلیدت آن‌ها را ندارد، ae و oe و ue بنویس — ولی هرگز نشانه‌ها را کاملاً حذف نکن. و ß فقط یک صدای s کشیده است و تنها بعد از مصوت بلند یا دو‌مصوتی می‌آید: Straße، groß. سوئیس آن را برانداخته و به‌جایش ss می‌نویسد. و اما قاعده‌ای که هر زبان‌آموزی را غافلگیر می‌کند: آلمانی «هر» اسمی را با حرف بزرگ می‌نویسد، نه فقط نام‌های خاص را — der Mann، das Haus، die Freiheit. اولش عجیب به نظر می‌رسد و بعد تبدیل می‌شود به سریع‌ترین راه پیدا کردن اسم‌ها در یک جملهٔ بلند.

The umlaut is not decoration: it changes the vowel and often the meaning. Mutter is mother, Mütter is mothers; schon means already, schön means beautiful. If your keyboard lacks them, write ae, oe, ue — never drop the marks entirely. The ß is simply a long s sound and appears only after a long vowel or a diphthong: Straße, groß. Switzerland has abolished it and writes ss instead. And the rule that surprises every learner: German capitalises EVERY noun, not just names — der Mann, das Haus, die Freiheit. It looks odd at first and then becomes the fastest way to find the nouns in a long sentence.
