Inversion after negative and restrictive adverbials

آغازگرهای رایج: never, rarely, seldom, hardly, scarcely, no sooner, not only, not until, only then, only after, little, under no circumstances, at no time. مقایسه کن: «I have never seen such a thing» ← «Never have I seen such a thing.» اگر فعل کمکی نباشد، do/does/did اضافه کن: «She only realised later» ← «Only later did she realise.» دو جفت ثابت: «Hardly/Scarcely had I… when…» و «No sooner had I… than…».

When a negative or restrictive adverbial opens the sentence, English inverts the subject and the auxiliary — exactly as in a question. Common openers: never, rarely, seldom, hardly, scarcely, no sooner, not only, not until, only then, only after, little, under no circumstances, at no time, on no account. Compare: "I have never seen such a thing" → "Never have I seen such a thing." If there is no auxiliary, add do/does/did: "She only realised later" → "Only later did she realise." Two fixed pairs: "Hardly/Scarcely had I… when…" and "No sooner had I… than…". This is a written, rhetorical device — powerful in an essay or a speech, but odd in casual conversation.

Never have I been so disappointed.
No sooner had we arrived than it started raining.
Not only did she apologise, but she also paid for the damage.
