It-clefts and wh-clefts
جملهٔ شکافته یک جملهٔ ساده را به دو بند تقسیم میکند تا یک عنصر برجسته شود. شکافتهٔ IT: «It + be + بخش کانونی + that/who + بقیه». ساده: «Sara sent the letter on Monday.» تأکید روی شخص: «It was Sara who sent the letter.» تأکید روی زمان: «It was on Monday that Sara sent it.» این روشِ استاندارد تصحیح کردنِ دیگری است: «It wasn't the budget that killed it — it was the deadline.» شکافتهٔ WH بندِ wh را جلو میآورد و کانون را بعد از «is» میگذارد: «What I need is more time»، «What happened was that the server crashed»، «All I want is an apology»، «The reason we failed is that nobody spoke up». از شکافته برای تقابل، تصحیح یا رسیدن به نکتهٔ اصلی استفاده کن — ولی نه دو بار در یک بند، وگرنه تأکید از بین میرود.
A cleft splits one plain sentence into two clauses so that one element is spotlighted. IT-CLEFT: "It + be + the focused part + that/who + the rest." Plain: "Sara sent the letter on Monday." Focus the person: "It was Sara who sent the letter." Focus the time: "It was on Monday that Sara sent it." This is the standard way to correct somebody: "It wasn't the budget that killed it — it was the deadline." WH-CLEFT (also called pseudo-cleft) fronts a wh-clause and puts the focus after "is": "What I need is more time", "What happened was that the server crashed", "All I want is an apology", "The reason we failed is that nobody spoke up". Use clefts to contrast, correct, or build up to a punchline — but never twice in one paragraph, or the emphasis wears off.
