Present, past and perfect participle clauses
عبارت وصفی دو جمله را در یکی فشرده میکند و فاعل و فعل کمکی را حذف میکند. وصفی حال (-ing) برای کار همزمان یا دلیل: «Walking home, I met an old friend» (= در حالی که میرفتم…). «Not knowing the answer, I stayed silent» (= چون نمیدانستم…). توجه: منفی اول میآید: «Not knowing»، هرگز «Knowing not». وصفی گذشته (-ed/-en) برای معنای مجهول: «Built in 1890, the bridge still carries traffic» (= پلی که در ۱۸۹۰ ساخته شد…). وصفی کامل (having + قسمت سوم) وقتی یک کار آشکارا پیش از دیگری تمام شده: «Having finished the report, she went home.» قانون آهنین، دقیقاً مثل لهستانی: عبارت وصفی و جملهٔ اصلی باید یک فاعل داشته باشند. «Walking home, the rain started» غلط است — باران که راه نمیرفت.
A participle clause compresses two sentences into one, dropping the subject and the auxiliary. PRESENT PARTICIPLE (-ing) for a simultaneous action or a reason: "Walking home, I met an old friend" (= While I was walking…). "Not knowing the answer, I stayed silent" (= Because I did not know…). Note the negative goes FIRST: "Not knowing", never "Knowing not". PAST PARTICIPLE (-ed/-en) for a passive meaning: "Built in 1890, the bridge still carries traffic" (= The bridge, which was built…). PERFECT PARTICIPLE (having + past participle) when one action clearly finished before the other: "Having finished the report, she went home." THE IRON RULE, exactly as in Polish: the participle and the main clause must share the same subject. "Walking home, the rain started" is wrong — the rain was not walking.
