Three ways to compress
عبارتهای وصفی جای کل یک بند پیرو را میگیرند: «Because I did not know what to say, I stayed quiet» ← «Not knowing what to say, I stayed quiet.» موصولی کوتاهشده «who/which + be» را حذف میکند: «the report which was published in May» ← «the report published in May.» Most of them had lived here for years.» ← «We interviewed forty families, most of whom had lived here for years.»
Lessons 15–17 give you three saws for cutting length without cutting meaning. PARTICIPLE CLAUSES replace a whole subordinate clause: "Because I did not know what to say, I stayed quiet" → "Not knowing what to say, I stayed quiet." REDUCED RELATIVES delete "who/which + be": "the report which was published in May" → "the report published in May." ADVANCED RELATIVES let you fold a second statement into the first instead of starting a new sentence: "We interviewed forty families. Most of them had lived here for years." → "We interviewed forty families, most of whom had lived here for years." Two cautions. Both participle clauses and reduced relatives sound formal, so a chat message stays plain. And never chain three compressions in one sentence — the reader loses the subject and the sentence collapses.
