Three questions that settle almost every article
سه پرسش را بهترتیب بپرس. اول: کلی است یا خاص؟ اسم جمع یا غیرقابلشمارش که بهطور کلی به کار رود حرف تعریف نمیگیرد: «Books are expensive»، «Advice is free»، «Life is hard». دوم: آیا شنونده میداند کدام یکی؟ اگر بله، «the»: معلوم از بافت («Close the door»)، قبلاً ذکرشده («I bought a book. The book was dull»)، یا یگانه («the sun»، «the government»، «the first time»). اگر تازه و مفرد شمارشپذیر است، «a/an»: «I saw a fox.» سوم: نهادی است که برای کارکردش به کار میرود؟ آنگاه حرف تعریف را حذف کن: go to school / church / prison / hospital / bed / work (یعنی خود فعالیت)، در برابر «go to the school» (ساختمان). همچنین بدون حرف تعریف: بیشتر کشورها، وعدههای غذا («after lunch»)، زبانها («speak Arabic»)، حملونقل با «by» («by train»)، و اسمهای انتزاعیِ کلی («honesty matters»).
Ask three questions in order. FIRST: is it general or specific? A plural or uncountable noun used generally takes NO article: "Books are expensive", "Advice is free", "Life is hard". SECOND: does the listener already know which one? If yes, use "the": known from context ("Close the door"), mentioned before ("I bought a book. The book was dull"), or unique ("the sun", "the government", "the first time"). If it is new and singular countable, use "a/an": "I saw a fox." THIRD: is it an institution used for its purpose? Then drop the article: go to school / church / prison / hospital / bed / work (meaning the activity), versus "go to the school" (the building). Also no article with: most countries, meals ("after lunch"), languages ("speak Arabic"), transport with "by" ("by train"), and abstract nouns in general ("honesty matters").
