Five ways to hedge
تعدیل، زبانِ عدمقطعیتِ صادقانه است و در انگلیسی آکادمیک نشانهٔ دقت است نه ضعف. افعال وجهی: may, might, could — «Coffee may reduce the risk.» افعال گزارش: seem, appear, tend to, suggest, indicate — «The data suggest a link»، «Prices tend to rise.» قیدها: possibly, probably, apparently, arguably, broadly speaking, to some extent. عبارتهای غیرشخصی: «it could be argued that»، «it is widely believed that»، «there is some evidence that». کمیتسنجها: some, many, a number of, the majority — بهجای «all» یا «everyone». به تفاوت قدرت دقت کن: «Coffee prevents heart disease» ادعایی است که یک نمونهٔ نقض نابودش میکند؛ «Coffee may be associated with a lower risk» در برخورد با شواهد دوام میآورد. مهارت B2 این است که قدرت زبانت را با قدرت مدرکت جور کنی.
Hedging is the language of honest uncertainty, and in academic English it is a mark of rigour, not weakness. MODALS: may, might, could — "Coffee may reduce the risk." REPORTING VERBS: seem, appear, tend to, suggest, indicate — "The data suggest a link", "Prices tend to rise." ADVERBS: possibly, probably, apparently, arguably, broadly speaking, to some extent. IMPERSONAL PHRASES: "it could be argued that", "it is widely believed that", "there is some evidence that". QUANTIFIERS: some, many, a number of, the majority — instead of "all" or "everyone". Notice the difference in force: "Coffee prevents heart disease" is a claim that one counterexample destroys; "Coffee may be associated with a lower risk" survives contact with the evidence. The B2 skill is matching the strength of your language to the strength of your proof.
