The register pair
تقریباً هر فعل عبارتیِ رایج یک دوقلوی تککلمهایِ لاتینتبار دارد که رسمیتر به نظر میرسد. put off ← postpone؛ cut down ← reduce؛ carry out ← conduct/perform؛ find out ← discover؛ bring about ← cause؛ go up ← increase؛ look into ← investigate؛ leave out ← omit؛ set up ← establish؛ give up ← abandon؛ point out ← indicate؛ deal with ← address؛ put up with ← tolerate؛ get rid of ← eliminate. هیچکدام بهتر نیست — به موقعیتهای متفاوتی تعلق دارند. گفتار، ایمیل به همکار و بیشتر روزنامهنگاری فعل عبارتی را ترجیح میدهد؛ گزارش، قرارداد یا مقالهٔ علمی تککلمه را. نکتهٔ دستوری: برخی افعال عبارتی جداشدنیاند («put the meeting off»، «put it off» — ضمیر حتماً باید وسط بیاید)، و برخی جدانشدنی («look into the matter»، هرگز «look the matter into»).
Almost every common phrasal verb has a single-word Latin-based twin that sounds more formal. put off → postpone; cut down → reduce; carry out → conduct/perform; find out → discover/ascertain; bring about → cause; go up → increase; look into → investigate; leave out → omit; set up → establish; give up → abandon; point out → indicate; deal with → address; put up with → tolerate; get rid of → eliminate. Neither is better — they belong to different situations. Speech, email to a colleague, and most journalism prefer the phrasal verb; a report, a contract or an academic paper prefers the single word. Grammar note: some phrasal verbs are SEPARABLE ("put the meeting off", "put it off" — a pronoun must go in the middle), while others are INSEPARABLE ("look into the matter", never "look the matter into").
