What actually changes between registers
سطح سبک همان ادب نیست؛ فاصلهٔ اجتماعی است. با حرکت بهسوی رسمی، شش چیز عوض میشود. کوتاهسازیها ناپدید میشوند: «can't» ← «cannot». افعال عبارتی تککلمه میشوند: «came up» ← «arose»؛ «put off» ← «postpone». واژگان از ریشهٔ ژرمنی به لاتین میرود: «get» ← «obtain»، «buy» ← «purchase»، «start» ← «commence»، «enough» ← «sufficient»، «about» ← «regarding». مجهول بیشتر میشود، چون شخص را حذف میکند: «We made a mistake» ← «An error was made». جملهها بلندتر و پیروتر میشوند. و آغاز و پایان قالبهای ثابت میگیرند: «Dear Sir or Madam… Yours faithfully». دو هشدار. رسمیت بیش از حد برای همکار سرد یا پرافاده به نظر میرسد، و رسمیت کم برای مشتری بیدقت. وقتی مطمئن نیستی، میانهٔ خنثی — کلمات کامل، بدون کوتاهسازی، واژگان ساده — تقریباً هرگز غلط نیست.
Register is not politeness; it is social distance. Six things change as you move formal. CONTRACTIONS disappear: "can't" → "cannot". PHRASAL VERBS become single words: "came up" → "arose"; "put off" → "postpone". VOCABULARY shifts from Germanic to Latin roots: "get" → "obtain", "buy" → "purchase", "start" → "commence", "enough" → "sufficient", "about" → "regarding". THE PASSIVE increases, because it removes the person: "We made a mistake" → "An error was made". SENTENCES lengthen and subordinate more. And the OPENINGS AND CLOSINGS become fixed formulas: "Dear Sir or Madam… Yours faithfully". Two warnings. Over-formality reads as cold or pompous to a colleague, and under-formality reads as careless to a client. When unsure, the neutral middle — full words, no contractions, plain vocabulary — is almost never wrong.
