Narrating a career: sequence, cause and compression
داستان یک مسیر شغلی همزمان سه چیز لازم دارد. توالی: برای زنجیرهٔ شغلها گذشتهٔ ساده به کار ببر، و برای قدم بعدیِ عمدی go on to: «I qualified in 2010, worked in a hospital for three years, then went on to join a start-up.» برای قدمی که کسی برنامهریزیاش نکرده بود از end up + ing استفاده کن: «I ended up running logistics.» علت: بخش جالب این نیست که چه شد، بلکه این است که چرا در پیاش آمد. از grow out of، lead to، come from استفاده کن: «The second career grew out of a problem I kept meeting.» فشردهسازی: اینجاست که عبارتهای وصفیِ درس ۱۵ ارزششان را نشان میدهند. بهجای «Because I had watched medicines spoil in transit, I started asking why» بنویس «Having watched medicines spoil in transit, I started asking why.» وصفیِ کامل Having + اسم مفعول یک علتِ پیشین را در یک عبارت نشان میدهد و رزومه یا پاسخ مصاحبه دقیقاً همین را میخواهد. یک الگوی دیگر که خوب است داشته باشی: what began as X turned into Y — «What began as a favour turned into a company.»
A career story needs three things at once. SEQUENCE: use the past simple for the chain of jobs, and go on to for the next deliberate step: "I qualified in 2010, worked in a hospital for three years, then went on to join a start-up." Use end up plus -ing for the step nobody planned: "I ended up running logistics." CAUSE: the interesting part is not what happened but why it followed. Use grow out of, lead to, come from: "The second career grew out of a problem I kept meeting." COMPRESSION: this is where the participle clauses of lesson 15 earn their place. Instead of "Because I had watched medicines spoil in transit, I started asking why", write "Having watched medicines spoil in transit, I started asking why." The perfect participle Having + past participle marks an earlier cause in one phrase, which is exactly what a CV or an interview answer needs. One more pattern worth having: what began as X turned into Y — "What began as a favour turned into a company."
