The conditional as a negotiating tool

معامله: if به‌همراه would راهی است که به یک امتیاز قیمت می‌چسبانی — «Would there be any flexibility if I took on the reporting line?» پرسش باز: what sort of figure did you have in mind? و how would you feel about…? I am afraid that would be difficult / that is not something we could do at this stage — would و could نمی‌گذارند رد قطعی به نظر برسد. I would be happy with X, provided that Y / as long as Y. عبارت‌های provided that و as long as از if قوی‌ترند: شرطت را صریح نام می‌برند. توافق جزئی: in principle, yes — but…

Negotiation in English runs almost entirely on conditionals and modal distance, because both sides need to explore without committing. THE TRADE: if plus would is how you attach a price to a concession — "Would there be any flexibility if I took on the reporting line?" Notice the past tense took: it is not past time, it is distance. The same sentence with take sounds like a demand. THE OPEN QUESTION: what sort of figure did you have in mind? and how would you feel about…? invite a number without naming one. THE SOFT REFUSAL: I am afraid that would be difficult / that is not something we could do at this stage — would and could keep the refusal from sounding final. THE CONDITIONAL YES: I would be happy with X, provided that Y / as long as Y. Provided that and as long as are stronger than if: they name your condition explicitly. THE PARTIAL AGREEMENT: in principle, yes — but… lets you accept the shape of a deal while reopening the detail. Avoid I want and I need; in this register they read as pressure, and pressure invites a flat no.

Would you consider forty-six if I started in March?
I would accept that, provided that the review is at six months.
I am afraid that would be difficult at this stage.
