The passive and the impersonal: describing failure without accusing
مجهولِ بیفاعل رویداد را جلو میاندازد و شخص را بیرون میگذارد: «The report was not sent on time» بهجای «You did not send the report.» گزارشِ غیرشخصی تو را از ادعا فاصله میدهد: it seems / it appears / it looks as though — «It seems the figures arrived late.» مشکلِ اسمشده کنش را به چیزی تبدیل میکند که با هم میتوانید وارسیاش کنید: بهجای «you approved it too slowly» بگو «approval is the bottleneck.» راهحلِ جمعی از could we و shall we استفاده میکند نه از you must: «Could we agree that anything after Thursday moves to the next cycle?» و از سهم خودت، قویترین حرکت در کل این سطح سبک، وجهیِ گذشتهٔ پشیمانی از درس ۸ است: «I should have flagged it earlier.»
When something goes wrong at work, English has a well-worn way of reporting it that keeps the room calm. THE AGENTLESS PASSIVE puts the event first and leaves the person out: "The report was not sent on time" rather than "You did not send the report." The information is identical; the temperature is not. THE IMPERSONAL REPORT distances you from the claim: it seems / it appears / it looks as though — "It seems the figures arrived late." You are reporting an impression, so nobody has to defend a fact. THE NOMINALISED PROBLEM turns an action into a thing you can examine together: instead of "you approved it too slowly", say "approval is the bottleneck." A thing can be fixed; a person has to be defended. THE COLLECTIVE SOLUTION uses could we and shall we, not you must: "Could we agree that anything after Thursday moves to the next cycle?" AND FOR YOUR OWN PART, the strongest move in the whole register is the past modal of regret from lesson 8: "I should have flagged it earlier." Taking one piece of the blame yourself is what makes the agentless passive read as fairness rather than evasion.
