Formal register: nominalisation, and what to cut
نامهٔ رسمی، نامهٔ غیررسمی با واژههای بلندتر نیست. سه چیز واقعاً عوض میشود. اول، اسمسازی: انگلیسی رسمی جایی که گفتار فعل را ترجیح میدهد، اسم را ترجیح میدهد — «following the introduction of the new system» بهجای «after they brought in the new system». در هر نامه یکیدو بار به کارش ببر؛ نامهای که تماماً از اسمسازی ساخته شده باشد خواندنی نیست. دوم، دوقلوی رسمیِ هر فعل عبارتی که در درس ۲۶ دیدی: set up میشود establish، cut down میشود reduce، look into میشود investigate، put off میشود postpone، find out میشود ascertain. سوم، قالبهای آغاز و پایان که ثابتاند و نباید بداهه ساخته شوند: «I am writing in response to the vacancy advertised on…»، «I enclose my CV for your consideration»، «I would welcome the opportunity to discuss this further»، «Yours sincerely» وقتی نام شخص را نوشتهای، «Yours faithfully» وقتی Dear Sir or Madam نوشتهای. چه چیزی را حذف کنیم: صفتهایی که هیچ شاهدی پشتشان نیست. «I am a highly motivated, hard-working team player» به خواننده هیچ نمیگوید. «I ran the weekend rota for eleven staff for two years» همهچیز را میگوید، و صفتش را خودِ خواننده میسازد.
A formal letter is not an informal letter with longer words. Three things actually change. FIRST, NOMINALISATION: formal English prefers the noun where speech prefers the verb — "following the introduction of the new system" rather than "after they brought in the new system". Use it once or twice per letter; a letter made entirely of nominalisations is unreadable. SECOND, THE FORMAL TWIN of every phrasal verb, which you met in lesson 26: set up becomes establish, cut down becomes reduce, look into becomes investigate, put off becomes postpone, find out becomes ascertain. THIRD, THE OPENING AND CLOSING FORMULAE, which are fixed and should not be improvised: "I am writing in response to the vacancy advertised on…", "I enclose my CV for your consideration", "I would welcome the opportunity to discuss this further", "Yours sincerely" when you named the person, "Yours faithfully" when you wrote Dear Sir or Madam. WHAT TO CUT: adjectives with no evidence behind them. "I am a highly motivated, hard-working team player" tells a reader nothing. "I ran the weekend rota for eleven staff for two years" tells them everything, and the adjective is theirs to draw.
