Describing trends: verb, adverb, and comparison base
گزارش ارقام واژگان کوچک و بستهای دارد که باید کاملاً مالکش باشی. صعودی: rise, increase, climb, grow, go up, surge (شدید)، edge up (بسیار کم). نزولی: fall, decrease, drop, decline, slide, plunge (شدید)، edge down (بسیار کم). هیچکدام: hold steady, remain flat, plateau, level off, fluctuate (بالا و پایین). درجه: sharply, steeply, significantly, steadily, gradually, slightly, marginally. مقدار در برابر سطح — همین خطاست که زبانآموز را لو میدهد. برای اندازهٔ تغییر by و برای مقصد to بیاور: «rose by 11%»، «rose to 55 million»، «fell from 60 to 48». اگر منظورت تغییر است هرگز «rose to 11%» نگو. مبنای مقایسه چیزی است که عدد را به اطلاعات تبدیل میکند: on the same quarter last year، year on year، against forecast، compared with the previous month. رقمِ بیمبنا («revenue was 55 million») داده است؛ رقمِ بامبنا («revenue was up 11% year on year») گزارش است. و به معنای متعدیِ مفیدِ account for دقت کن: exports account for a third of sales (یعنی تشکیل میدهد)، و what accounts for the dip? (یعنی توضیح میدهد).
Reporting figures has a small closed vocabulary that you should own completely. RISING: rise, increase, climb, grow, go up, surge (sharp), edge up (tiny). FALLING: fall, decrease, drop, decline, slide, plunge (sharp), edge down (tiny). NEITHER: hold steady, remain flat, plateau, level off, fluctuate (up and down). DEGREE: sharply, steeply, significantly, steadily, gradually, slightly, marginally. AMOUNT versus LEVEL — this is the error that marks a learner. Use by for the size of the change and to for the destination: "rose by 11%", "rose to 55 million", "fell from 60 to 48". Never "rose to 11%" if you mean the change. THE COMPARISON BASE is what turns a number into information: on the same quarter last year, year on year, against forecast, compared with the previous month. A figure without a base ("revenue was 55 million") is data; a figure with one ("revenue was up 11% year on year") is a report. And note the useful transitive sense of account for: exports account for a third of sales (= make up), and what accounts for the dip? (= explains).
