Weighing options: concession, preference and the balanced conclusion

از although، while، admittedly، it is true that، granted استفاده کن: «Although the upside is clear, the timing worries me.» دوم، بده‌بستان را صریح بگو با at the expense of، in return for، at the cost of: «We would gain reach at the expense of quality.» I would rather move slowly than borrow — به مصدر بدون to پس از هر دوی rather و than دقت کن. همچنین I would sooner…، I would prefer to… I would stop short of borrowing. چهارم، با نشانگر توازن نتیجه بگیر: on balance، all things considered، taken as a whole، on the whole.

A decision argument in English has a fixed shape, and examiners at B2 look for it directly. FIRST, CONCEDE the other side before you argue against it. Use although, while, admittedly, it is true that, granted: "Although the upside is clear, the timing worries me." Conceding first is not weakness; an argument that never concedes reads as if you have not understood the objection. SECOND, STATE THE TRADE-OFF explicitly with at the expense of, in return for, at the cost of: "We would gain reach at the expense of quality." THIRD, EXPRESS PREFERENCE with the structures from lesson 3: I would rather move slowly than borrow — note the bare infinitive after both rather and than. Also I would sooner…, I would prefer to…, and for the option you reject: I would stop short of borrowing. FOURTH, CONCLUDE with a balance marker: on balance, all things considered, taken as a whole, on the whole. The word balance is doing real work — it signals that you weighed rather than picked, and that is precisely what the examiner is scoring.

Although the returns look strong, the risk is concentrated.
We would gain speed at the expense of control.
On balance, I would rather wait than borrow.
