Meeting moves: the fixed phrases that buy you a turn
قطعکردن: sorry to interrupt, but…؛ can I just come in on that?؛ if I could add something there. واژهٔ just در همهٔ اینها کارِ ادب را میکند. نگهداشتن نوبت وقتی کسی وسط حرفت میپرد: if I could just finish this thought…؛ I will come to that in a moment؛ bear with me one second. به تعویق انداختن یک موضوع: can we park that for now?؛ let us come back to that؛ that might be one for another meeting. برگشتن به نکتهات: coming back to what I said earlier…؛ as I was saying…؛ to pick up on Karim's point. بررسی توافق: are we agreed on that?؛ does anyone see it differently?؛ can I take that as a yes? جمعبندی برای بستن: so the action points are…؛ to summarise, we have agreed X and deferred Y. دو نکتهٔ سبکی. اول، «can I just come in» در هر محیط کاری خنثی است؛ «let me speak» تهاجمی است. دوم، رئیس جلسه برای کنترل از let us استفاده میکند («let us come back to that») — بهعنوان شرکتکننده، could we را ترجیح بده.
Meetings run on a small set of formulaic moves. Learn them as whole units — improvising here sounds abrupt in a way that no amount of correct grammar repairs. INTERRUPTING: sorry to interrupt, but…; can I just come in on that?; if I could add something there. The word just is doing the politeness work in all of them. HOLDING YOUR TURN when someone cuts across you: if I could just finish this thought…; I will come to that in a moment; bear with me one second. DEFERRING a topic: can we park that for now?; let us come back to that; that might be one for another meeting. RETURNING to your point: coming back to what I said earlier…; as I was saying…; to pick up on Karim's point. CHECKING agreement: are we agreed on that?; does anyone see it differently?; can I take that as a yes? SUMMARISING to close: so the action points are…; to summarise, we have agreed X and deferred Y. Two register notes. First, "can I just come in" is neutral in every workplace; "let me speak" is aggressive. Second, chairs use let us for control ("let us come back to that") — as a participant, prefer could we.
