Reading hedges backwards
در درس ۲۳ تعدیل را یاد گرفتی تا محتاط به نظر برسی. تبلیغات دقیقاً از همان گرامر برای هدف معکوس استفاده میکند: تقریباً هیچ نگفتن، در حالی که انگار خیلی چیزها میگوید. یاد بگیر تعدیل را معکوس بخوانی و میتوانی هر تبلیغی را بخوانی. UP TO سقف ادعا را میگذارد و هیچ تضمینی نمیدهد: «up to 40% off» با یک قلم تخفیفخورده برآورده میشود. FROM همین کار را از سر دیگر میکند: «flights from £19» یعنی یک صندلی، در یک روز. HELPS بههمراه مصدر بدون to تمام مسئولیت نتیجه را برمیدارد: «helps reduce wrinkles» — کمک میکند، نه اینکه انجام میدهد. CAN و MAY صرفاً امکاناند: «can improve concentration» دربارهٔ تقریباً هر چیزی درست است. UP TO و OVER با هم راهی است که یک بازه بیمعنا میشود. صفتهای تفضیلی بدون طرف دوم رایجترینِ همهاند: «cleans better» — بهتر از چه؟ «Now with 30% more» — بیشتر از چه؟ همان than غایب دارد کار میکند. و AS MUCH AS که یعنی «حداکثر»، برای بیشتر خوانندهها «حداقل» شنیده میشود. هیچکدام غیرقانونی نیست، و نکته همین است: گرامر دقیق است؛ برداشت نه. وقتی خودت ادعایی مینویسی، آزمونش ساده است — هر تعدیل را بردار و ببین جمله هنوز درست است یا نه.
In lesson 23 you learned to hedge in order to sound careful. Advertising uses exactly the same grammar for the opposite purpose: to say almost nothing while sounding like it says a lot. Learn to run the hedge backwards and you can read any advert. UP TO caps the claim and guarantees nothing: "up to 40% off" is satisfied by one discounted item. FROM does the same at the other end: "flights from £19" means one seat, on one day. HELPS plus a bare infinitive removes all responsibility for the result: "helps reduce wrinkles" — helps, not does. CAN and MAY are pure possibility: "can improve concentration" is true of almost anything. UP TO and OVER together are how a range becomes meaningless. COMPARATIVES WITH NO SECOND TERM are the commonest of all: "cleans better" — better than what? "Now with 30% more" — more than what? The missing than is doing the work. And AS MUCH AS, meaning at most, is heard as at least by most readers. None of this is illegal, and that is the point: the grammar is precise; the impression is not. When you write your own claims, the test is simple — remove every hedge and see whether the sentence is still true.
