Four moves, and the one word that changes each
واژهٔ جهت همهچیز را تعیین میکند: leads to و results in از علت به معلول میروند؛ stems from و is driven by از معلول به علت. و رقمِ بیمبنا — year on year، against forecast — داده است نه گزارش. سپس بدهبستان با at the expense of، ترجیح با would rather + مصدر بدون to، و بستن با on balance.
CAUSE (lesson 37). The direction word decides everything: leads to and results in run cause → effect; stems from and is driven by run effect → cause. Get the arrow right before you worry about vocabulary. FIGURES (38). The preposition decides everything: by is the size of the change, to is the level reached, from…to is the whole journey. And a figure without a baseline — year on year, against forecast — is data, not a report. DECISION (39). The concession decides everything: although, while, admittedly. An argument that concedes nothing has not understood its opponent, and a B2 examiner reads that instantly. Then the trade-off with at the expense of, the preference with would rather + bare infinitive, and the close with on balance. CLAIMS (41). The hedge decides everything, in both directions: you use up to, tends to and may to be honest about uncertainty; advertising uses the identical words to imply certainty it has not got. The test in both cases is the same — take the hedge out and ask whether the sentence is still true. If it is, the hedge was politeness. If it is not, the hedge was the whole claim.
