Four futures, and how sure each one is
استدلال دربارهٔ آینده به بیش از will نیاز دارد. انگلیسی چهار آیندهٔ متمایز دارد و اینها جایگزینپذیر نیستند. WILL + مصدر پیشبینیِ ساده است: «Many jobs will change.» WILL BE DOING (آیندهٔ استمراری) تو را درون لحظهای در جریان میگذارد: «In ten years we will be working alongside these systems» — آینده را عادی و از پیش جاری نشان میدهد، و برای همین خوشبینها سراغش میروند. WILL HAVE DONE (آیندهٔ کامل) از نقطهای جلوتر به عقب نگاه میکند: «By 2040 much of that work will have disappeared» — به عبارتِ by نیاز دارد و قویترین صورت بلاغی است چون نتیجه را از پیش تمامشده جا میزند. BE ABOUT TO / BE ON THE VERGE OF قریبالوقوع بودن است: «The sector is on the verge of a shift.» بعد قطعیت را با قید تنظیم کن نه با فعل دیگر: will almost certainly، will probably، is likely to، may well، could conceivably، is unlikely to. دقت کن is likely to و is bound to الگوهای صفتیاند — likely در این کاربرد to + مصدر میگیرد، نه that + جمله. در پایان، برای پیشبینیای که قبلاً شکست خورده، قالبِ گذشتهدرآینده بینظیر است: «That is what was said about weaving in 1810» — نقلقول (درس ۷) در خدمت استدلال.
Argument about the future needs more than will. English has four distinct futures and they are not interchangeable. WILL + INFINITIVE is the plain prediction: "Many jobs will change." WILL BE DOING (future continuous) puts you inside an ongoing moment: "In ten years we will be working alongside these systems" — it presents the future as normal, already under way, which is why optimists reach for it. WILL HAVE DONE (future perfect) looks back from a point ahead: "By 2040 much of that work will have disappeared" — it needs a by-phrase, and it is the strongest rhetorical form because it treats the outcome as already finished. BE ABOUT TO / BE ON THE VERGE OF is imminence: "The sector is on the verge of a shift." Then calibrate the certainty with an adverb rather than a different verb: will almost certainly, will probably, is likely to, may well, could conceivably, is unlikely to. Note that is likely to and is bound to are adjective patterns — likely takes to + infinitive, not that + clause, in this use. Finally, for a prediction that has failed before, the past-in-future frame is invaluable: "That is what was said about weaving in 1810" — reported speech (lesson 7) doing argumentative work.
