Separating what was found from what it means
انگلیسی آکادمیک بیش از هر چیز مراقب یک تمایز است: آنچه پژوهش مشاهده کرده در برابر آنچه توضیح میدهد. گرامرِ هرکدام فرق دارد. گزارش یافته گذشتهٔ ساده را نگه میدارد و خنثی میماند: «The study found that coffee drinkers lived longer.» به found that دقت کن — نه proved that، که ادعایی دربارهٔ توضیح است نه مشاهده. گزارش تفسیر به حالِ تعدیلشده میرود: «This suggests / indicates / points to a link»، «the authors argue that…». فعل به خواننده میگوید مقاله تا کجا پیش میرود. جملهٔ علّی جایی است که زبانآموزان بیشادعا میکنند. در انگلیسی X is associated with Y و X is linked to Y مشاهدهاند؛ X causes Y، X results in Y و X leads to Y توضیحاند. روزنامهنگارها بیصدا از اولی به دومی میروند و از نوشتار B2 انتظار میرود متوجه شود. شرطِ شواهد مفیدترین الگوی کل این درس است: «What would have to be true for that to hold?»، «If the sample were larger, the result would be more convincing»، «For the claim to stand, the trial would have to be replicated.» همین الگوی آخر — for X to Y, Z would have to… — شرطِ باور را بیان میکند نه یک واقعیت، و راهی است که با یک پژوهش مخالفت کنی بیآنکه کسی را ناصادق بخوانی.
Academic English is careful about one distinction above all others: what a study OBSERVED versus what it EXPLAINS. Different grammar carries each. REPORTING THE FINDING keeps the past simple and stays neutral: "The study found that coffee drinkers lived longer." Note found that — not proved that, which is a claim about explanation, not observation. REPORTING THE INTERPRETATION moves into hedged present: "This suggests / indicates / points to a link", "the authors argue that…". The verb tells the reader how far the paper is going. THE CAUSAL SENTENCE is where learners over-claim. In English, X is associated with Y and X is linked to Y are observation; X causes Y, X results in Y and X leads to Y are explanation. Journalists move from the first to the second silently, and B2 writing is expected to notice. THE CONDITIONAL OF EVIDENCE is the most useful pattern in the whole lesson: "What would have to be true for that to hold?", "If the sample were larger, the result would be more convincing", "For the claim to stand, the trial would have to be replicated." That last pattern — for X to Y, Z would have to… — states a condition of belief rather than a fact, and it is how you disagree with a study without calling anyone dishonest.
