The two grammars of scientific English
نشانگرهای توالی که ترتیب ساده (then، subsequently) را از تکمیل (once + حال کامل) و از همزمانی (while، as) جدا میکنند. بندهای هدف — so that، in order to، to prevent … from -ing — که فرقِ فهرست و توضیحاند. و وقتی علت دور از دسترس است، وجهیهای گذشته تنظیمشده بر پایهٔ قطعیت: must have (تقریباً مطمئن)، can't have (تقریباً مطمئن که نه)، may/might/could have (نامطمئن)، should have (انتظارِ برآوردهنشده). ارزیابی (۴۶ و ۴۷) استدلالی است. خطِ مشاهده/توضیح: is associated with و is linked to توصیف میکنند؛ causes و leads to توضیح میدهند؛ found that گزارش میکند، proved that بیشادعا میکند. افعالِ تفسیرِ تعدیلشده — suggests، indicates، points to — بهاندازهٔ قوت شواهد. شرطهای باور بهجای اتهام: for X to hold, Y would have to…؛ if the sample were larger…
EXPLAINING (lessons 43, 44) is descriptive. Present simple throughout. Agentless passive for every step someone performs on the material; active for what the material does by itself. Sequence markers that distinguish plain order (then, subsequently) from completion (once + present perfect) from simultaneity (while, as). Purpose clauses — so that, in order to, to prevent … from -ing — which are the difference between a list and an explanation. And when the cause is out of reach, past modals calibrated by certainty: must have (nearly sure), can't have (nearly sure not), may/might/could have (unsure), should have (failed expectation). EVALUATING (46, 47) is argumentative. The observation/explanation line: is associated with and is linked to describe; causes and leads to explain; found that reports, proved that over-claims. Hedged interpretation verbs — suggests, indicates, points to — measured to the strength of the evidence. Conditions of belief rather than accusations: for X to hold, Y would have to…; if the sample were larger… And quantity handled honestly: relative figures always paired with a baseline, fewer for countables and less for uncountables, approximation words in place of a precision the data cannot carry. If you take one habit from this unit, take this: before you write causes, check that you have earned it.
