The unreal past — one pattern, many uses
انگلیسی از شکلِ گذشته استفاده می‌کند تا بگوید چیزی واقعی نیست، حتی وقتی معنا حال یا آینده است. همین یک ایده، چهار ساختار را با هم توضیح می‌دهد: شرطِ نوع دوم («If I had time, I would help» — وقت ندارم)؛ wish («I wish I had time»)؛ would rather با فاعلِ متفاوت («I'd rather you came tomorrow»)؛ و it's time («It's time we left»). در همهٔ این‌ها زمانِ گذشته یعنی «این خیالی یا دیرشده است»، نه «این اتفاق افتاد». گذشتهٔ غیرواقعی را آزادانه با مجهول ترکیب کن: «If the risks had been assessed, we would not be here» — مجهولِ گذشتهٔ کامل درونِ شرطِ ترکیبی.
English uses a PAST form to signal that something is not real, even when the meaning is present or future. That single idea explains four structures at once: second conditional ("If I had time, I would help" — I do not have time); wish ("I wish I had time"); would rather with a different subject ("I'd rather you came tomorrow"); and it's time ("It's time we left"). In each case the past tense means "this is imaginary or overdue", not "this happened". Combine the unreal past freely with the passive: "If the risks had been assessed, we would not be here" — a past perfect passive inside a mixed conditional.
