Disagreeing without dismissing

بخشی را که درست است بپذیر، مشخص نه مبهم: «That is fair, and it is the part we have handled badly.» ادعا را با زبان غیرشخصی از شخص جدا کن: «the evidence suggests»، «what tends to happen is»، «cities that did that found…» جفتِ امتیازی را به کار ببر: although / while / it is true that … ، the fact remains that … / even so / that said. به‌جای بستن بحث، مثال نقض را دعوت کن: «Is there a case where that has worked?»، «What would change your mind?» «You are right, but…» هرجا صادقانه می‌توانی، جایش and بگذار — «You are right, and that is exactly why the bus has to come first» — که امتیاز را زنده نگه می‌دارد به‌جای اینکه لغوش کند.

The hardest B2 skill is not disagreeing — it is disagreeing while leaving the other person somewhere to stand. Four moves, in order. GRANT THE PART THAT IS TRUE, specifically, not vaguely: "That is fair, and it is the part we have handled badly." Notice it names WHICH part. A general "I see your point" is heard as a preface to being ignored. SEPARATE THE CLAIM FROM THE PERSON with the impersonal: "the evidence suggests", "what tends to happen is", "cities that did that found…" — the disagreement is now with a pattern, not with them. USE THE CONCESSIVE PAIR: although / while / it is true that … , the fact remains that … / even so / that said. The phrase the fact remains that is the strongest of these and should be saved for the point you will not move on. INVITE THE COUNTER-EXAMPLE rather than closing: "Is there a case where that has worked?", "What would change your mind?" One more thing worth naming: in English, but deletes what came before it. "You are right, but…" is heard as "you are wrong." Replace it with and where you honestly can — "You are right, and that is exactly why the bus has to come first" — which keeps the concession alive instead of cancelling it.

That is fair, and it is the part we have handled badly.
While the intention was good, the fact remains that traffic rose.
