Scale, agency and the honest "so what"

واژه‌های مقیاس اینجا از صفت‌ها مهم‌ترند: a fraction of، the bulk of، the overwhelming majority of، a rounding error، on any meaningful scale، negligible by comparison. «Household recycling is a fraction of the total» بیشتر از «household recycling is small» می‌گوید. «Mistakes were made» و «the blame was shifted» کسی را پنهان می‌کنند؛ بپرس by whom. وقتی فاعل را می‌خواهی، معلوم بیاور و نامش را ببر: «manufacturers chose the packaging»، «the campaign was funded by the industry it blamed.» تقابلِ نوع، نه درجه، همان جمله‌ای است که نیما لازم دارد: not X but Y، less a matter of X than of Y، X rather than Y: «This is less a matter of habit than of design.» و پایان‌بندی صادقانه‌ای که این موضوع می‌طلبد امتیازی است که تسلیم نیست: «That does not make the habit pointless; it makes it insufficient.»

This is an argument about proportion, and English has precise tools for it. SCALE WORDS matter more than adjectives here: a fraction of, the bulk of, the overwhelming majority of, a rounding error, on any meaningful scale, negligible by comparison. "Household recycling is a fraction of the total" says more than "household recycling is small". AGENCY — who actually does the thing — is where this argument is won or lost, and the passive from lesson 34 becomes suspicious rather than polite. "Mistakes were made" and "the blame was shifted" hide someone; ask by whom. When you want the agent, use the active and name it: "manufacturers chose the packaging", "the campaign was funded by the industry it blamed." THE CONTRAST OF KIND, not degree, is the sentence Nima needs: not X but Y, less a matter of X than of Y, X rather than Y: "This is less a matter of habit than of design." And the honest ending this topic demands is a concession that does not surrender: "That does not make the habit pointless; it makes it insufficient." The pair pointless / insufficient is worth keeping — most arguments about individual action collapse because someone treats those two words as the same.

Household waste is a fraction of the total, not the bulk of it.
This is less a matter of habit than of design.
That does not make it pointless; it makes it insufficient.
