Four grammatical choices that carry bias
سوگیری در خبر بهندرت گزارهای نادرست است. معمولاً یکی از چهار تصمیم دستوری است که همهشان را بلدی — و پس میتوانی یاد بگیری ببینیشان. یک، وجه فعل. معلوم فاعل را نام میبرد (Police shoot man)؛ مجهولِ بیفاعل حذفش میکند (Man shot). هیچکدام نادرست نیست؛ فقط یکی مسئولیت را تخصیص میدهد. دو، اسمسازی. تبدیل فعل به اسم کننده را کاملاً حذف میکند: «the shooting»، «the closure»، «the loss of jobs» — هیچکس شلیک نکرد، نبست، اخراج نکرد. بپرس چه کسی فعلی را که درون اسم پنهان شده انجام داده. سه، فعلِ گزارش، که موضع نویسنده را رمزگذاری میکند در حالی که خنثی به نظر میرسد: he said (خنثی)، he claimed (تردید)، he admitted (گناه)، he revealed (حقیقت)، he insisted (لجاجت)، he conceded (شکست). عوضکردن said با claimed هیچ واقعیتی را تغییر نمیدهد و همهچیز دیگر را. چهار، پیشانگاره — آنچه جمله مفروض میگیرد بهجای اینکه ادعا کند. «When did the council stop caring about the estate?» پیشفرض میگیرد که متوقف شده؛ نمیتوانی پاسخ بدهی بیآنکه بپذیریاش. حروف تعریف معرفه هم بیصدا همین کار را میکنند: «the failure of the scheme» شکست را مفروض میگیرد. دانستنش خوب است که: allegedly و reportedly تعدیلهای حقوقیاند نه تردید — مسئولیت ادعا را به یک منبع منتقل میکنند بیآنکه برداشتی را که در خواننده میماند ضعیف کنند.
Bias in news is rarely a false statement. It is usually one of four grammatical decisions, all of which you already know how to make — and can therefore learn to see. ONE, VOICE. Active names an agent (Police shoot man); agentless passive removes one (Man shot). Neither is untrue; only one assigns responsibility. TWO, NOMINALISATION. Turning a verb into a noun deletes the doer entirely: "the shooting", "the closure", "the loss of jobs" — nobody shot, closed or sacked anyone. Ask who did the verb hiding inside the noun. THREE, THE REPORTING VERB, which encodes the writer's stance while looking neutral: he said (neutral), he claimed (doubt), he admitted (guilt), he revealed (truth), he insisted (stubbornness), he conceded (defeat). Swapping said for claimed changes nothing factual and everything else. FOUR, PRESUPPOSITION — what a sentence takes for granted rather than asserts. "When did the council stop caring about the estate?" presupposes that it stopped; you cannot answer without accepting it. Definite articles do this quietly too: "the failure of the scheme" assumes the failure. Also worth knowing: allegedly and reportedly are legal hedges, not doubts — they transfer responsibility for the claim to a source without weakening the impression left on the reader.
