Agreeing and then redirecting, and the negative agreement
مهسا کاری میکند که ارزش تقلید دارد: کاملاً موافقت میکند و باز نتیجه را نمیپذیرد. سه تکه گرامر این کار را میکند. موافقتِ منفی: nor do I / neither do I، با وارونگی — فعل کمکی پیش از فاعل. «I have nothing to hide.» «Nor do I.» زبانآموزان معمولاً «me too» یا «I also not» میگویند؛ nor do I صورت طبیعی است و وارونه است، مثل قیدهای منفیِ درس ۱۱. جفتِ مثبتش so do I است. فعل کمکی را با فعل اصلی جور کن: «I did not go.» «Nor did I.» «I cannot swim.» «Neither can I.» تغییر مسیر: that is not really what X protects / that is not the question / the issue is not whether X but whether Y. این واقعیت را میپذیرد و ربطش را رد میکند، که حرکتی بهمراتب قویتر از انکار واقعیت است. قالبِ «حقِ» که این موضوع روی آن میچرخد: the right to be judged on X rather than Y، the right not to have to explain yourself، آزادیِ «از» بهجای آزادیِ «برای». و یک پرسشِ آزمونِ مفید که تماماً گرامر است: is it proportionate to…? — که استدلالی دربارهٔ احساسات را به استدلالی دربارهٔ نسبت تبدیل میکند، و رد کردنش خیلی سختتر است.
Mahsa does something worth copying: she agrees completely and still refuses the conclusion. Three pieces of grammar do it. THE NEGATIVE AGREEMENT: nor do I / neither do I, with inversion — auxiliary before subject. "I have nothing to hide." "Nor do I." Learners usually say "me too" or "I also not"; nor do I is the natural form and it is inverted, like the negative adverbials in lesson 11. The positive twin is so do I. Match the auxiliary to the original verb: "I did not go." "Nor did I." "I cannot swim." "Neither can I." THE REDIRECT: that is not really what X protects / that is not the question / the issue is not whether X but whether Y. This concedes the fact and rejects its relevance, which is a far stronger move than disputing the fact. THE RIGHT-TO frame this topic runs on: the right to be judged on X rather than Y, the right not to have to explain yourself, freedom from rather than freedom to. And one useful test question that is pure grammar: is it proportionate to…? — which converts an argument about feelings into an argument about ratio, and is much harder to dismiss.
