Distinguishing: the move that makes a debate honest
قویترین کاری که در مناظره میتوانی بکنی حمله نیست — تمایزگذاری است، یعنی نشاندادن اینکه دو چیزی که یکی گرفته شدهاند یکی نیستند. انگلیسی مجموعهٔ مشخصی از عبارتها برایش دارد، و خوب بهکاربردنشان دقیقاً همان چیزی است که ممتحن B2 از «پروراندن استدلال» مراد میکند. قالب پایه: there is a difference between X and Y؛ X is one thing, Y is another؛ that is a separate question. جابهجاکردن هدف، که حرکت امیر است: the objection is to X, not to Y as such. عبارت as such یعنی «فینفسه» و کار دقیقی میکند — چیزی را که از آن دفاع میشود از چیزی که به آن حمله میشود جدا میکند. حقوقی در برابر عملی، که مالِ رؤیاست: legally, no — in practice, yes. همچنین strictly speaking، technically، formally در برابر in practice، in effect، to all intents and purposes. این جفت یکی از مفیدترینها در انگلیسیِ بزرگسال است، چون بیشتر اختلافنظرها در شکاف میان این دو زندگی میکنند. پذیرفتنِ آبرومندانهٔ یک تمایز: that is a fair distinction، I take the point، that is well put — و در پیاش I would still want to…، که موضعت را نگه میدارد بیآنکه وانمود کنی تکان نخوردهای. و دقت کن هیچکدام چه کاری نمیکنند: هیچکدام دیگری را به سوءنیت متهم نمیکند. در B2، استدلالی که بهجای وارسی ادعاها نیت نسبت میدهد، هر بار نمره کم میکند.
The strongest thing you can do in a debate is not to attack — it is to distinguish, which means showing that two things being treated as one are not the same. English has a well-defined set of phrases for it, and using them well is exactly what a B2 examiner means by "develops an argument". THE BASIC FRAME: there is a difference between X and Y; X is one thing, Y is another; that is a separate question. SHIFTING THE TARGET, which is Amir's move: the objection is to X, not to Y as such. The phrase as such means "in itself" and is doing precise work — it isolates the thing being defended from the thing being attacked. LEGAL VERSUS PRACTICAL, which is Roya's: legally, no — in practice, yes. Also strictly speaking, technically, formally against in practice, in effect, to all intents and purposes. This pair is one of the most useful in adult English, because most disagreements live in the gap between them. CONCEDING A DISTINCTION gracefully: that is a fair distinction, I take the point, that is well put — followed by I would still want to…, which keeps your position without pretending you were not moved. And note what neither speaker does: neither accuses the other of bad faith. At B2, an argument that attributes motives instead of examining claims is marked down every time.
