Reporting verbs, tense, and the caveat you must not drop
خلاصهکردن در انگلیسی عمدتاً یعنی انتخاب صادقانهٔ فعل. نردبان شدت، از ضعیف به قوی: she suggests / she implies ← she argues / she maintains / she contends ← she shows / she demonstrates ← she proves / she establishes. الگوی پس از فعل آزاد نیست، و همینجاست که زبانآموزان نمره از دست میدهند: argue that + جمله، claim that + جمله، suggest that + جمله، ولی criticise + اسم، question + اسم، reject + اسم؛ deny + ing؛ accuse someone of + ing؛ urge someone to + مصدر. همچنین دقت کن suggest مفعول + مصدر نمیگیرد: نه «she suggested me to read»، بلکه «she suggested that I read» یا «she suggested reading». و در پایان، بازگویی یعنی تغییر ساختار، نه تعویض مترادف — جملهای با همان شکل و واژههای دیگر هنوز جملهٔ اصل است. و هرگز قید احتیاطی را حذف نکن: «the effect was significant in older participants only» همان لحظه که «only» میرود دروغ میشود.
Summarising in English is mostly a matter of choosing verbs honestly. THE STRENGTH LADDER, weakest to strongest: she suggests / she implies → she argues / she maintains / she contends → she shows / she demonstrates → she proves / she establishes. Match the rung to what the author actually claimed, not to how confident she sounded. If she hedged, your summary hedges; deleting her hedge is a form of misquotation even when every word you wrote is true. THE TENSE CONVENTION: use the present simple for what a text says, however old it is — "Orwell argues", "the report finds" — and the past simple only for what someone did or what happened in a study: "the researchers surveyed 400 households." THE PATTERN AFTER THE VERB is not free, and this is where learners lose marks: argue that + clause, claim that + clause, suggest that + clause, but criticise + noun, question + noun, reject + noun; deny + -ing; accuse someone of + -ing; urge someone to + infinitive. Also note that suggest does not take an object + infinitive: not "she suggested me to read", but "she suggested that I read" or "she suggested reading". PARAPHRASE, finally, means changing the structure, not swapping synonyms — a sentence with the same shape and different words is still the original's sentence. And never drop the caveat: "the effect was significant in older participants only" becomes a lie the moment "only" goes.
