Words that decide the argument before it starts
«People who arrived by boat on Tuesday» توصیف است؛ «illegal migrants» حکم است. وقتی دستهبندی محل مناقشه است، اسمِ خنثی بههمراه جملهٔ موصولیِ تعریفکننده بیاور — people who have applied for asylum، those who arrived without papers. و جایی که برچسب، شخص را بلعیده، ساختِ شخصمحور به کار ببر: نه «the disabled»، «the homeless»، «the illegals»، بلکه people with disabilities، people sleeping rough، people without documents. این تزئین نیست. از نظر دستوری، گروه اسمیای مثل the homeless یک وضعیت را به یک هویت تبدیل میکند، و همین که هویت شد، دیگر نمیتوانی بپرسی کسی چطور به آنجا رسیده یا چطور ممکن است بیرون بیاید.
Some vocabulary is not descriptive but ALREADY an argument, and this topic is full of it. In English the pairs to notice are: migrant (moves by choice) versus refugee (recognised as fleeing danger) versus asylum seeker (asking to be recognised, not yet decided); expat and immigrant, which usually describe the same act done by people of different means; and settle versus flood, pour in, swamp — the second group are water metaphors, and water has no intentions and cannot be reasoned with, which is precisely why they are chosen. THE GRAMMAR THAT KEEPS YOU HONEST is the same set you met in lesson 46: report what is known and hedge what is not. "People who arrived by boat on Tuesday" is a description; "illegal migrants" is a verdict. Use the neutral noun plus a defining relative clause when the category is disputed — people who have applied for asylum, those who arrived without papers. And use PERSON-FIRST construction where the label has swallowed the person: not "the disabled", "the homeless", "the illegals", but people with disabilities, people sleeping rough, people without documents. This is not decoration. Grammatically, a noun phrase like the homeless turns a circumstance into an identity, and once it is an identity you can no longer ask how someone got there or how they might leave.
