Purpose, and the appeal to how things have always been
پرسشِ هدف تمامِ این درس است: برای چیست؟ انگلیسی صورتها را با دقت جدا میکند. what is it for? (کارکردش)، what is the point of it? (ارزشش، اغلب با تردید)، the whole point of it is to… (تأکید بر کارکرد)، it is meant to… / it is supposed to… (کارکردِ در نظر گرفتهشده، با اشاره به اینکه شاید به آن نرسد). «It is supposed to bring the families together» بیصدا میپذیرد که شاید نرساند. توسل به سنت — we have always done it this way — از راه گرامر پاسخ داده میشود نه احساس، و برادرزاده نشان میدهد چطور: آن «always» را بیازما. حال کامل بههمراه always ادعای خطی ناگسسته میکند، و خطهای ناگسسته بهندرت از یک پرسش جان سالم به در میبرند. عمویش بعد به for as long as I remember عقب مینشیند که صادقانه و بهمراتب ضعیفتر است. هر دو را یاد بگیر: we have always… (ادعای قوی) و as far as I know / for as long as I can remember / in my lifetime (ادعایی دربارهٔ شواهدِ خودت). جداکردن صورت از کارکرد راهِ حلشدن بحث است و الگوی keep what X, change what Y را میخواهد: «keep what it is for, and change what it costs.» مرتبط: the substance rather than the form، the spirit of it rather than the letter، in principle if not in detail.
THE PURPOSE QUESTION is the whole lesson: what is it FOR? English separates the forms carefully. what is it for? (its function), what is the point of it? (its value, often sceptical), the whole point of it is to… (asserting the function), it is meant to… / it is supposed to… (its intended function, hinting it may not achieve it). "It is supposed to bring the families together" quietly concedes that it may not. THE APPEAL TO TRADITION — we have always done it this way — is answered grammatically, not emotionally, and the niece shows how: test the always. Present perfect with always claims an unbroken line, and unbroken lines rarely survive one question. Her uncle then retreats to for as long as I remember, which is honest and much weaker. Learn both: we have always… (strong claim) and as far as I know / for as long as I can remember / in my lifetime (a claim about your own evidence). THE SEPARATION OF FORM FROM FUNCTION is how the argument resolves, and it needs the pattern keep what X, change what Y: "keep what it is for, and change what it costs." Related: the substance rather than the form, the spirit of it rather than the letter, in principle if not in detail.
