Advising without lecturing, and the diagnosis that lands
صورتِ پرسشی: have you thought about -ing? / would it help to…? / is there any chance of…? اینها نصیحتِ لباسپرسشپوشیدهاند و میگذارند طرف مقابل رد کند بیآنکه تو را رد کند. غیرشخصی: what sometimes helps is…، a lot of people find that…، in my experience… — نصیحت بهعنوان اطلاعات عرضه میشود نه دستور. شرطی: if it were me, I would… / I might be tempted to… — صریحاً دربارهٔ خودت، پس نمیتواند دستور باشد. قویترین، نگهداشته برای وقتی که جا دارد: you really need to / this cannot go on / please go and see someone. ولی حرکتی که در متن واقعاً کمک میکند اصلاً نصیحت نیست — نامگذاری دوبارهٔ مسئله است: «the problem is not your stamina, it is that nobody covers you.» الگوی the problem is not X, it is Y تقصیر را از شخص برمیدارد و روی وضعیت میگذارد، و برای همین است که دانا تشکر میکند. به حال کامل استمراریِ همدلانه هم دقت کن: you have been carrying this on your own — که مدت را به رسمیت میشناسد نه فقط وضعیت را. از at least (at least you have a job) و always look on the bright side پرهیز کن؛ هر دو کوچک میشمارند و انگلیسی آنها را بیاعتنایی میشنود.
Advice in English is graded, and getting the level wrong is why well-meant advice offends. YOU SHOULD is stronger than most learners realise — it implies you already know what is right for someone else. Use the softer ladder first. THE QUESTION FORM: have you thought about -ing? / would it help to…? / is there any chance of…? These are advice disguised as enquiry, and they let the other person refuse without refusing you. THE IMPERSONAL: what sometimes helps is…, a lot of people find that…, in my experience… — the advice is offered as information, not instruction. THE CONDITIONAL: if it were me, I would… / I might be tempted to… — explicitly about you, so it cannot be an order. THE STRONGEST, saved for when it is warranted: you really need to / this cannot go on / please go and see someone. But the move that actually helps in the reading is not advice at all — it is RENAMING THE PROBLEM: "the problem is not your stamina, it is that nobody covers you." The pattern the problem is not X, it is Y takes the fault off the person and puts it on the situation, and it is why Dana says thank you. Note also the sympathetic present perfect continuous: you have been carrying this on your own — which acknowledges the duration, not just the state. Avoid at least (at least you have a job) and always look on the bright side; both minimise, and English hears them as dismissal.
