Intention, attempt and outcome — three different verbs
انگلیسی خواستن، تلاشکردن و انجامدادن را بهمراتب تیزتر از آنچه بیشتر زبانآموزان به کار میبرند جدا میکند، و کل این موضوع به همین تفاوت وابسته است. قصد: I mean to (نقشهای مستقر که مدام به آن عمل نمیکنی — «I keep meaning to call her»)، I intend to، I am going to، I plan on -ing. به keep + ing برای شکستِ تکراری دقت کن: I keep meaning to، I keep forgetting، I keep putting it off. تلاش: try to + مصدر یعنی تلاشکردن («I tried to stop»)؛ try + ing یعنی امتحانکردنش بهعنوان یک روش («I tried stopping for a week»). اینها واقعاً دو جملهٔ متفاوتاند و امتحان همین را میسنجد. بههمینترتیب، remember to do (تکلیف) در برابر remember doing (خاطره)؛ stop to do (توقف برای انجام) در برابر stop doing (قطع کردن). نتیجه: manage to (با وجود دشواری موفق شدن)، succeed in -ing، end up -ing (برنامهریزینشده)، fail to، give up -ing. قصدِ شکستخورده که قلب این درس است: was going to but didn't، had meant to، kept meaning to، never got round to -ing. «I was going to go to the gym» میگوید نقشه بود و دوام نیاورد؛ «I got round to it eventually» میگوید دوام آورد، دیر. و برای نکتهٔ روانشناس، قالب مفید این است: what is missing is not X but Y — دانستن آن چیزی نیست که کم است.
English distinguishes wanting, trying and doing far more sharply than most learners use it, and the whole topic depends on the difference. INTENTION: I mean to (a settled plan you keep not acting on — "I keep meaning to call her"), I intend to, I am going to, I plan on -ing. Note keep + -ing for the repeated failure: I keep meaning to, I keep forgetting, I keep putting it off. ATTEMPT: try to + infinitive means make an effort ("I tried to stop"); try + -ing means experiment with it as a method ("I tried stopping for a week"). These are genuinely different sentences and the exam tests it. Similarly, remember to do (the obligation) versus remember doing (the memory); stop to do (pause in order to) versus stop doing (cease). OUTCOME: manage to (succeeded despite difficulty), succeed in -ing, end up -ing (unplanned), fail to, give up -ing. FAILED INTENTION, which is the heart of this lesson: was going to but didn't, had meant to, kept meaning to, never got round to -ing. "I was going to go to the gym" says the plan existed and did not survive; "I got round to it eventually" says it did, late. And for the psychologist's point, the useful frame is what is missing is not X but Y — knowing is not what is missing.
