Turning a feeling into a request
شیرین در شش واژه مفیدترین کارِ کل این درس را میکند: یک گلایه را به درخواستی مشخص و قابلرد تبدیل میکند. گرامرِ این تبدیل ارزش دارد بهعنوان یک عادت یاد گرفته شود. گلایه مبهم است، دربارهٔ گذشته، و دربارهٔ شخص: you never help، you always leave it to me، I do everything. نمیشود رویش عمل کرد، و برای همین بهجای تغییر، عذرخواهی میگیرد. درخواست مشخص است، دربارهٔ آینده، و دربارهٔ کار: I need Tuesdays. Could you take Tuesday evenings from now on? Would you be able to do the pharmacy run each week? به زمان دقت کن: حال یا آینده، نه گذشتهٔ سادهٔ اتهامآمیز. نردبان وجهی، از نرمترین به قاطعترین: would you be able to…?، could you…?، I would like you to…، I need you to…، I am asking you to… دو تای آخر بیادبانه نیستند؛ با خانواده اغلب تنها چیزیاند که کار میکنند، چون صورتهای نرمتر خیلی راحت اختیاری شنیده میشوند. و بخشی که زبانآموزان جا میاندازند: درخواست را متناهی کن. every Tuesday، for the next three months، until the assessment comes through. درخواستِ بیپایان مثل مطالبهٔ تمام زندگیِ کسی شنیده میشود و فقط به همین دلیل رد میشود. در پایان، اگر عذرخواهی بهجای کمک عرضه میشود، صریح ردش کن: I do not need an apology, I need X. همین الگو — I do not need X, I need Y — کارآمدترین چیزِ این درس است.
Shirin does the most useful thing in this whole lesson in six words: she converts a grievance into a specific, refusable request. The grammar of that conversion is worth learning as a habit. A GRIEVANCE is vague, about the past, and about the person: you never help, you always leave it to me, I do everything. It cannot be acted on, which is why it gets an apology instead of a change. A REQUEST is specific, about the future, and about the task: I need Tuesdays. Could you take Tuesday evenings from now on? Would you be able to do the pharmacy run each week? Note the tense: present or future, not the accusatory past simple. THE MODAL LADDER, softest to firmest: would you be able to…?, could you…?, I would like you to…, I need you to…, I am asking you to… The last two are not rude; with family they are often the only ones that work, because the softer forms are too easy to hear as optional. AND THE PART LEARNERS MISS: make the request FINITE. every Tuesday, for the next three months, until the assessment comes through. An open-ended request is heard as a demand for someone's whole life, and gets refused for that reason alone. Finally, refuse the apology explicitly if it is being offered instead of help: I do not need an apology, I need X. That sentence pattern — I do not need X, I need Y — is the single most efficient thing in the lesson.
