Four situations, one habit
نشانهها (۶۷). سه پرسش: مدت (حال کامل استمراری، for + بازه، since + نقطه)، تکرار (on and off، most days، now and again)، و روند (it has been getting worse / easing off) — همان که مردم فراموشش میکنند و پزشک بیش از همه میخواهدش. بهعلاوهٔ وصفیهای مجهول برای آنچه تغییرش میدهد: brought on by، relieved by، triggered by. و تعدیلِ باورپذیر: more of an ache than a pain. نصیحت (۶۸). درجهبندیاش کن. اول صورتهای پرسشی و غیرشخصی (have you thought about…، what sometimes helps is…)، بعد شرطی (if it were me)، آخر صورتهای مستقیم. بهتر از هر نصیحتی، نامگذاری دوبارهٔ مسئله است: the problem is not X, it is Y. هرگز با at least کوچک نشمار. عادتها (۶۹). قصد (keep meaning to، was going to)، تلاش (try to در برابر try -ing) و نتیجه (manage to، end up -ing، never got round to) را جدا کن. remember to do در برابر remember doing؛ stop to do در برابر stop doing. شواهد (۷۰) و مراقبت (۷۱). تجربه را بپذیر — it may well have — و فقط انتساب را زیر سؤال ببر: the question is whether… بپرس همزمان چه چیز دیگری در جریان بود و چه کسی نفع شخصی دارد. و هر گلایه را به درخواستی تبدیل کن که مشخص، آیندهمحور، کارمحور و متناهی باشد: I do not need an apology, I need Tuesdays. در هر چهار، عادت یکی است: دقیقاً بهاندازهای که میتوانی پشتیبانی کنی ادعا کن، و نه بیشتر — همین است که باعث میشود بخشی را که ادعا میکنی باور کنند.
SYMPTOMS (67). Three questions: duration (present perfect continuous, for + period, since + point), frequency (on and off, most days, now and again), and trend (it has been getting worse / easing off) — the one people forget and doctors most want. Plus the passive participles for what changes it: brought on by, relieved by, triggered by. And the credible hedge: more of an ache than a pain. ADVICE (68). Grade it. Question forms and impersonal forms first (have you thought about…, what sometimes helps is…), the conditional next (if it were me), the direct forms last. Better than any advice is renaming the problem: the problem is not X, it is Y. Never minimise with at least. HABITS (69). Distinguish intention (keep meaning to, was going to), attempt (try to versus try -ing), and outcome (manage to, end up -ing, never got round to). Remember to do versus remember doing; stop to do versus stop doing. EVIDENCE (70) and CARE (71). Grant the experience — it may well have — and question only the attribution: the question is whether… Ask what else was happening and who has a vested interest. And convert every grievance into a request that is specific, future, task-shaped and finite: I do not need an apology, I need Tuesdays. Across all four, the habit is the same: claim exactly as much as you can support, and no more — which is what makes people believe the part you do claim.
