The unreal past for advice about what was not done
I should have closed the book (ملایم، تقصیر خودم)، I ought to have (کمی رسمیتر)، I could have (در دسترسم بود، بدون سرزنش)، I might have (ضعیفترین، تقریباً یک تأمل)، I would have if I had known (سرزنش به اطلاعاتِ غایب منتقل میشود)، و if only I had (پشیمانیِ محض، بدون نصیحت). آنچه معلم نمیگوید ارزش دیدن دارد: نه «you should have known» که سرزنش میکند، بلکه توصیفِ آنچه جواب میداد. نصیحت دربارهٔ گذشته فقط وقتی مینشیند که به آینده قابلانتقال باشد، پس انگلیسی معمولاً جفتش میکند: «next time, close the book» پس از «you should have closed the book.» الگوی دوم اینجا مقایسهٔ احساس با نتیجه است، که تمامِ بصیرتِ این درس است: it feels worse and works better؛ it seems harder but sticks؛ the easier it feels, the less you are learning. همین آخری تفضیلیِ دوگانهٔ درس ۵۱ است که واقعاً کار میکند. و به تمایزِ ثابتی که معلم میگذارد دقت کن: familiar is not the same as known — همان قالبِ X is not the same thing as Y از درس ۶۴، که تا حالا باید خودکار شده باشد.
The student asks the exact question this grammar exists for: what should I have done instead? SHOULD HAVE + PAST PARTICIPLE is advice about a past that cannot be changed — regret, hindsight, or a lesson for next time. Its relatives all carry slightly different weight: I should have closed the book (mild, my own fault), I ought to have (slightly more formal), I could have (it was available to me, no blame), I might have (weakest, almost a musing), I would have if I had known (blame transferred to the missing information), and if only I had (pure regret, no advice). WHAT THE TEACHER DOES NOT SAY is worth noticing: not "you should have known", which blames, but a description of what would have worked. Advice about the past lands only when it is transferable to the future, so English usually pairs it: "next time, close the book" after "you should have closed the book." THE SECOND PATTERN here is the comparison of experience with outcome, which is the whole insight of the lesson: it feels worse and works better; it seems harder but sticks; the easier it feels, the less you are learning. That last is the double comparative from lesson 51 doing real work. And note the fixed distinction the teacher draws: familiar is not the same as known — the X is not the same thing as Y template from lesson 64, which by now should be automatic.
