Rival explanations, and how to design them apart
عرضهٔ رقیب: or it may simply be that…، another explanation would be…، that is consistent with X as well as with Y، the same result would follow if… نامبردن درهمآمیزی: the score is a proxy for the skill, not the skill itself؛ we may be measuring the coaching rather than the learning؛ the two are not distinguishable from this data. عبارتِ we cannot tell from this whether X or Y ارزش دارد یکجا از بر شود. پیشنهادِ آزمونِ تفکیککننده، که همان بخشی است که شک را به علم تبدیل میکند: give them a task the coaching never touched؛ if it is really X, we would expect to see…؛ if it is Y instead, we would expect…؛ the two predict different things, so let us look. و به پرسش نادیا دقت کن: how would you tell them apart?
Peyman does the move that separates argument from opinion: he offers a RIVAL EXPLANATION and then proposes a test that would tell them apart. The grammar comes in three parts. OFFERING THE RIVAL: or it may simply be that…, another explanation would be…, that is consistent with X as well as with Y, the same result would follow if… Note "would follow if" — the second conditional used not to speculate but to show that the evidence does not discriminate. NAMING THE CONFUSION: the score is a proxy for the skill, not the skill itself; we may be measuring the coaching rather than the learning; the two are not distinguishable from this data. The phrase we cannot tell from this whether X or Y is worth memorising whole. PROPOSING THE DISCRIMINATING TEST, which is the part that turns scepticism into science: give them a task the coaching never touched; if it is really X, we would expect to see…; if it is Y instead, we would expect…; the two predict different things, so let us look. This is the second conditional again, in its most useful form — a prediction about a world you can actually go and check. And note Nadia's question: how would you tell them apart? Asking that of your own belief, before someone else does, is most of what critical thinking amounts to.
