Feedback on the work, and questions that get more of it
اول، فاعل را خودِ کار قرار بده نه شخص: «the second section does not do what the first promises»، هرگز «you did not…». انگلیسی این کار را با فاعل بیجان بههمراه فعل دقیق میکند — the argument holds، the transition is missing، the evidence arrives late، this paragraph is doing two jobs. مقایسه کن: cut the second paragraph، move this to the front، define this term before you use it، give one example here. اگر نمیتوانی تغییر را نام ببری، صادقانه بگو — something is not landing for me here and I cannot yet say what — که از دستوری مبهم مفیدتر است، چون نویسنده را در مسیر غلط نمیفرستد. غلط: do you mean it is badly written? درست: which part stopped working for you? / what were you expecting at that point? / if you were rewriting it, where would you start? و شنیدن را از پذیرفتن جدا کن: let me take that away and think about it به هیچ چیزی متعهد نمیشود در حالی که هیچ چیزی را هم رد نمیکند. یک بار مقاومتکردن عادی است — I would defend that choice, because…
GIVING IT. Two rules do most of the work. First, make the subject the WORK, not the person: "the second section does not do what the first promises", never "you did not…". English does this with an inanimate subject plus a precise verb — the argument holds, the transition is missing, the evidence arrives late, this paragraph is doing two jobs. Second, be SPECIFIC ENOUGH TO BE ACTED ON. "Make it clearer" is not feedback; it names a feeling, not a change. Compare: cut the second paragraph, move this to the front, define this term before you use it, give one example here. If you cannot name the change, say so honestly — something is not landing for me here and I cannot yet say what — which is more useful than a vague instruction, because it does not send the writer off in a wrong direction. TAKING IT. The move that gets you more is the clarifying question, and there is a right and a wrong form. Wrong: do you mean it is badly written? — a closed question inviting yes/no, which flattens the point. Right: which part stopped working for you? / what were you expecting at that point? / if you were rewriting it, where would you start? Open, and about the text. And separate hearing from agreeing: let me take that away and think about it commits to nothing while conceding nothing. Pushing back once is normal — I would defend that choice, because… — but pushing back on everything reads as not having listened.
