Measuring your own progress, in the right tenses
حرفزدن دقیق دربارهٔ یادگیریِ خودت به سه زمان نیاز دارد که دقیق به کار روند. نگاهِ بلندمدت حال کامل است: I have got much better at listening؛ my writing has improved؛ I have never managed to hear the difference. فرایندی در گذشته را به وضعیتی در حال وصل میکند، و پیشرفت دقیقاً همین است. مرحلهٔ اخیر حال کامل استمراری است: I have been reading a lot more؛ I have been working on prepositions. بر خودِ فعالیت و مدتش تأکید دارد و ادعای نتیجه نمیکند — که وقتی وسط تلاشی، صادقانه است. فلات جایی است که زبانآموزان سراغ صورت غلط میروند. «I do not improve» غلط است؛ I do not seem to be improving یا I have not been improving lately به کار ببر. ساختِ seem to be راهِ طبیعیِ گزارشِ برداشتِ خودت از خودت است. برای مقایسه با خودت، انگلیسی شرطِ نوع دوم با یک سنجشِ فرضی میخواهد — how would I know if I were improving? — و پاسخ تقریباً همیشه یک ضبط، یک متن، یا یک امتحان قدیمی است: چیزی بیرون از سرت، چون درون سرت معیار همراه خودت بالا میرود. همین ایده عبارتِ ثابتی دارد که ارزش داشتن دارد: you cannot see the growth from inside؛ the goalposts move as you do. و یک تمایز که باید نگه داری: روانی یعنی سرعت و پیوستگی، دقت یعنی درستی، و در B2 با هم معاوضه میشوند — فشار روی یکی معمولاً مدتی به قیمت دیگری تمام میشود، که مرحلهای عادی است نه پسرفت.
Talking accurately about your own learning needs three tenses used precisely. THE LONG VIEW is the present perfect: I have got much better at listening; my writing has improved; I have never managed to hear the difference. It links a past process to a present state, which is exactly what progress is. THE RECENT PHASE is the present perfect continuous: I have been reading a lot more; I have been working on prepositions. It stresses the activity and its duration, and it does not claim a result — which is honest when you are mid-effort. THE PLATEAU is where learners reach for the wrong form. "I do not improve" is wrong; use I do not seem to be improving or I have not been improving lately. The seem to be construction is the natural way to report your own impression of yourself. FOR THE COMPARISON WITH YOURSELF, English wants a second conditional with a hypothetical measurement — how would I know if I were improving? — and the answer is almost always a recording, a text, or an old exam: something outside your head, because inside your head the standard rises with you. That last idea has a fixed expression worth having: you cannot see the growth from inside; the goalposts move as you do. And a distinction to keep: fluency is speed and continuity, accuracy is correctness, and at B2 they trade off — pushing one usually costs the other for a while, which is a normal stage and not a regression.
