Obligation, permission and prohibition — the precise set
اینجا حوزهای است که خطای کوچکِ دستوری به اشتباهِ واقعی تبدیل میشود، پس تمایزها بیش از همیشه مهماند. الزام: must (گوینده تحمیلش میکند، یا قاعدهٔ همین متن است)، have to (قاعدهای بیرونی، از بیرونِ گوینده)، be required to و be obliged to (رسمی، حقوقی)، shall در قرارداد (یعنی must، نه آینده — «the tenant shall maintain…»). نبودِ الزام: do not have to / are not required to — میتوانی، ولی کسی مجبورت نمیکند. منع: must not / may not / are not permitted to. و اینجا خطایی هست که معنا را کاملاً عوض میکند: must not و do not have to متضادند، نه گونههای یکدیگر. you must not repaint یعنی ممنوع است؛ you do not have to repaint یعنی اختیاری است. زبانآموزان مدام این دو را جابهجا میکنند و پرپیامدترین اشتباهِ کل وجهیتِ B2 همین است. اجازه: may، be permitted to، be entitled to (حق، نه لطف)، be free to. گذشته: had to برای الزام گذشته؛ was not allowed to برای منع گذشته. دقت کن must در این معنا گذشته ندارد — «I musted» وجود ندارد، و «I must have gone» چیز کاملاً دیگری است (استنتاج، درس ۸). در پایان، تمایزِ آن دوست ارزش دارد بهعنوان یک جمله نگه داشته شود: they can ask; whether they can enforce it is a different question. نوشتهشدن و الزامآور بودن یکی نیستند.
This is the area where a small grammatical error becomes a factual mistake, so the distinctions matter more than usual. OBLIGATION: must (the speaker imposes it, or it is a rule of this text), have to (an external rule, from outside the speaker), be required to and be obliged to (formal, legal), shall in contracts (means must, not future — "the tenant shall maintain…"). NO OBLIGATION: do not have to / are not required to — you may, but nobody makes you. PROHIBITION: must not / may not / are not permitted to. And here is the error that changes meaning completely: must not and do not have to are opposites, not variants. You must not repaint means it is forbidden; you do not have to repaint means it is optional. Learners swap these constantly and it is the single most consequential mistake in the whole of B2 modality. PERMISSION: may, be permitted to, be entitled to (a right, not a favour), be free to. THE PAST: had to for a past obligation; was not allowed to for a past prohibition. Note there is no past of must in this sense — "I musted" does not exist, and "I must have gone" means something else entirely (deduction, lesson 8). Finally, the friend's distinction is worth keeping as a sentence: they can ask; whether they can enforce it is a different question. Being written down and being binding are not the same thing.
