Holding two true things at once
سرپرست حرکتی میکند که مبتدیها نمیتوانند و گویندگان B2 باید بتوانند: همزمان ادعای طرف مقابل و ادعای خودش را تأیید میکند. BOTH CAN BE TRUE قالبِ آن است، و انگلیسی مجموعهٔ کاملی دارد: both things can be true at once؛ that is true and it is not the whole story؛ I am not disputing X, I am adding Y؛ the two are not in competition. این با امتیازدادن فرق دارد که زمین واگذار میکند. اینجا هیچ چیز واگذار نمیکنی — فقط انتخابِ کاذبی را که پیشت گذاشتهاند رد میکنی. نامبردن صریحِ انتخاب کاذب صورت تیزترش است: that is a false choice؛ those are not the only two options؛ the question is not whether X or Y, but how much of each. و تمایزی که این موضوع رویش زندگی میکند: قانونی در برابر منصفانه، مجاز در برابر خردمندانه، در چارچوب قواعد در برابر درست. دقت کن پاسخِ مدیر خودش حرکت خوبی است — then you are criticising the procedure, not the decision — چون اختلاف را بهجای گستردهکردن، دقیقاً مکانیابی میکند. اختلافی که مکانیابی شده باشد قابلحل است؛ آنکه نشده فقط بلندتر میشود. برای گذشتهای که میتوانست جور دیگری برود، این درس به شرط نوع سوم و گونههای وجهیاش نیاز دارد: we could have paused it؛ we might have asked her first؛ had there been any discretion, we would have used it. و ببین استدلال پایانیِ سرپرست دربارهٔ هزینه است نه فضیلت — it is cheaper to make it now — که معمولاً همان نسخهای است که رویش عمل میشود.
The supervisor makes a move that beginners cannot and B2 speakers must: she affirms the other person's claim and her own at the same time. BOTH CAN BE TRUE is the frame, and English has a whole set: both things can be true at once; that is true and it is not the whole story; I am not disputing X, I am adding Y; the two are not in competition. This is different from conceding, which gives ground. Here you give nothing — you simply refuse the false choice you were offered. NAMING THE FALSE CHOICE explicitly is the sharper version: that is a false choice; those are not the only two options; the question is not whether X or Y, but how much of each. AND THE DISTINCTION THIS TOPIC LIVES ON: legal versus fair, permitted versus wise, within the rules versus right. Note that the manager's reply is itself a good move — then you are criticising the procedure, not the decision — because it locates the disagreement precisely instead of widening it. A disagreement that has been located can be settled; one that has not just gets louder. FOR THE PAST that could have gone otherwise, this lesson needs the third conditional and its modal variants: we could have paused it; we might have asked her first; had there been any discretion, we would have used it. And notice the supervisor's closing argument is about cost, not virtue — it is cheaper to make it now — which is usually the version that gets acted on.
