Why French stops inventing words at seventy
بیشتر زبان‌ها برای هر دهگان یک کلمهٔ تازه می‌سازند. فرانسه تا soixante این کار را می‌کند و بعد شروع می‌کند به شمردن بیست‌تایی — عادتی که از یک نظام شمارش بیست‌پایهٔ قدیمی به ارث رسیده. پس ۷۱ می‌شود soixante-et-onze یعنی «شصت‌و‌یازده» و ۹۵ می‌شود quatre-vingt-quinze یعنی «چهار-بیست-پانزده». ترفند عملی: وقتی quatre-vingt شنیدی، فوراً ۴ و ۲۰ ننویس — صبر کن بقیهٔ عدد بیاید و بعد تصمیم بگیر. فرانسویِ بلژیک و سوئیس هنوز septante و nonante سادهٔ خودشان را دارند، ولی در فرانسه همین حساب‌وکتاب را می‌شنوی.
Most languages invent a fresh word for each ten. French stops at soixante and then starts counting in twenties, a habit inherited from an old base-20 system. So 71 is soixante-et-onze (sixty-and-eleven) and 95 is quatre-vingt-quinze (four-twenty-fifteen). The practical trick: when you hear quatre-vingt, do not write 4 and 20 — wait for the rest of the number before you decide anything. Belgian and Swiss French keep the simpler septante and nonante, but in France you will hear the arithmetic.
