Why French says "the eyes" and means "my eyes"
انگلیسی برای اعضای بدن حتماً ضمیر ملکی میخواهد — my eyes، her hair. فرانسه این را زائد میداند: اگر فاعل جمله «من» است، این چشمها میتواند مال چه کسی باشد؟ پس فقط حرف تعریف معین میگذارد: J’ai les yeux bleus، Elle a les cheveux longs، Il se lave les mains. گفتن J’ai mes yeux bleus آنقدر که غلط باشد عجیب است، انگار داری اعلام میکنی این چشمها مال خودت است. یک نکتهٔ دیگر: œil جمع بیقاعده دارد — یک œil ولی دو yeux، که کلاً کلمهٔ دیگری است.
English insists on a possessive for body parts — my eyes, her hair. French finds that redundant: if the subject of the sentence is I, whose eyes could they be? So it uses the plain definite article: J’ai les yeux bleus, Elle a les cheveux longs, Il se lave les mains. Saying J’ai mes yeux bleus is not wrong so much as strange, like announcing that the eyes belong to you. Note also that œil is irregular in the plural — one œil, two yeux, a completely different word.
