The plural that is not an -s
بیشتر جمع‌های فرانسوی فقط یک -s بی‌صدا اضافه می‌کنند، ولی دو گروه این الگو را می‌شکنند و هر دو در همین درس‌اند. اسم‌هایی که به -al ختم می‌شوند آن را با -aux عوض می‌کنند: un animal می‌شود des animaux و un cheval می‌شود des chevaux. اسم‌هایی که به -eau ختم می‌شوند به‌جای -s یک -x می‌گیرند: un oiseau می‌شود des oiseaux. برخلاف آن -s بی‌صدا، پایانهٔ -aux واقعاً «تلفظ می‌شود»، پس این یکی از آن جمع‌های نادری است که گوشت می‌تواند بشنود. کلمه‌هایی که خودشان به -s ختم می‌شوند، مثل une souris، اصلاً تغییر نمی‌کنند.
Most French plurals just add a silent -s, but two groups break the pattern and both live in this lesson. Nouns ending in -al swap it for -aux: un animal → des animaux, un cheval → des chevaux. Nouns ending in -eau add -x instead of -s: un oiseau → des oiseaux. Unlike the silent -s, the -aux ending is actually PRONOUNCED, so this is one of the rare plurals your ear can hear. Words already ending in -s, like une souris, do not change at all.
