Three verbs for getting dressed
Porter describes what is already on your body right now: Je porte une robe rouge. Mettre describes the moment of putting it on: Je mets mon manteau et je pars. S habiller is the whole act of getting dressed, with no garment named. Choosing porter when you mean mettre is not a disaster, but it sounds like describing a photograph when you meant to describe an action. Note that with clothes French DOES use the possessive — mon manteau, mes chaussures — unlike with body parts in lesson 21.
