Countries have a gender, and it shows
کشورهای مؤنث، و هر کشوری که با مصوت شروع شود، en می‌گیرند: en France، en Italie، en Iran، en Allemagne. کشورهای مذکر au می‌گیرند: au Japon، au Maroc، au Canada. کشورهای جمع aux می‌گیرند: aux États-Unis، aux Pays-Bas. شهرها از همهٔ این‌ها فرار می‌کنند و فقط à می‌گیرند: à Paris، à Téhéran، à Tokyo. یک میان‌بر کاربردی: کشوری که به -e ختم شود معمولاً مؤنث است، با چند استثنای انگشت‌شمار مثل le Mexique.
Feminine countries, and any country beginning with a vowel, take en: en France, en Italie, en Iran, en Allemagne. Masculine countries take au: au Japon, au Maroc, au Canada. Plural ones take aux: aux États-Unis, aux Pays-Bas. Cities escape all of this and simply take à: à Paris, à Téhéran, à Tokyo. A useful shortcut: a country ending in -e is usually feminine, with a handful of exceptions such as le Mexique.
