The four engines of a beginner sentence
Avoir and aller are irregular and carry the most weight: avoir gives possession, age, hunger and existence, while aller gives movement and, with an infinitive, the whole future. Aimer and acheter are regular -er verbs, and their pattern covers hundreds of others: -e, -es, -e, -ons, -ez, -ent, of which only -ons and -ez are actually pronounced. Learn the two irregulars by heart and the regular pattern once, and you can build almost any sentence a beginner needs.
