No article, and the nouns that never change gender
Persian does exactly the same. The article comes back only when an adjective describes the job: è un bravo insegnante. As for gender, most professions have two forms — commesso and commessa, cameriere and cameriera — but a large group ending in -e or -ista does not change at all: l’insegnante, il/la giornalista, il/la dentista. Only the article tells you who is meant. And medico and ingegnere are still commonly used for women too, though la dottoressa and l’ingegnera are gaining ground.
